Reflections on Completing AANE’s Neurodivergent Couples Training 201 Certification

Dec 12, 2024

As I complete the AANE Neurodivergent Couples Training 201 Certification, I’m reflecting on how it has enhanced my practice and deepened my understanding of neurodivergent relationships. This certification has been a valuable experience, providing new tools and insights that I can now apply to better support my clients.

A Validation of What I Know

One of the most rewarding aspects of this training was realizing how much I already knew. My work with clients, combined with my research and experience, aligns with the evidence-based concepts introduced in the course. It was validating to see my approach confirmed through formal training, strengthening my confidence in the methods I use.

Simple, Effective Interventions

The training introduced several new interventions, which I love for their simplicity and ease of use. While many concepts may overlap with other modalities, the specific tools for neurodivergent couples are both concise and impactful. As someone who tends to be verbose, I now feel better equipped to offer clear, effective interventions that resonate with my clients.

The Power of Collaboration

Working alongside other clinicians during this training was incredibly rewarding. It was inspiring to exchange knowledge and experiences, reinforcing the importance of community in learning. Sharing insights with fellow therapists has motivated me to continue advocating for better support for neurodivergent couples.

The Need for Greater Understanding of Neurodivergent Relationships

This training has further fueled my passion for helping others understand the unique struggles of neurodivergent relationships. Many neurodivergent couples face challenges in communication, often rooted in misunderstandings about how they are wired. I believe it’s crucial for more therapists to recognize these challenges and offer support that fosters connection and reduces the shame often associated with neurodivergent experiences.

Integrating Knowledge and Lived Experience

I also appreciated the opportunity to bring my lived experience into the conversation. Being able to share both my professional insights and personal perspective as an AuDHDer enriched the learning process and allowed me to connect with clients in a more meaningful way.

Moving Forward

While this certification is just one step in my ongoing journey, it has provided me with valuable tools to help neurodivergent couples thrive. If you’re interested in learning more about training for clinicians or couples, I recommend checking out the AANE website for a variety of resources and courses.

I’m excited to continue applying what I’ve learned to support neurodivergent individuals and couples in building stronger, more connected relationships.
